If you're preparing for homeownership, cleaning up your credit report should be a top priority. Outdated or inaccurate information can lower your credit score and stand between you and the keys to your first home.
At Executive Estate Realty, we teach our clients how to take control of their financial future by leveraging the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA)—a powerful federal law that gives you the right to dispute incorrect or unverifiable items on your credit report.
What Is the FCRA, and Why Does It Matter?
The Fair Credit Reporting Act gives you the legal right to:
-
Access your credit report for free
-
Dispute inaccurate, outdated, or unverifiable items
-
Expect a response from the credit bureaus within 30 days
That means if an account doesn’t belong to you, is too old to be reported, or contains wrong information—it can and should be removed.
How to Dispute Items on Your Credit Report
1. Review All 3 Reports
Request your reports from Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion.
Look for:
-
Late payments you didn’t make
-
Accounts you don’t recognize
-
Closed or paid-off items still marked open
- Incorrect addresses and phone numbers
2. Submit a Formal Dispute
Each credit bureau has a dispute process online. Include supporting documentation (such as payment records or identity verification).
3. Follow Up
You should receive results within 30 days. If the bureau can’t verify the information, they must remove it.
