Nestled along the Hillsborough River in Tampa Heights, is much more than just a dining spot—it’s a part of Tampa’s rich history. The building, once the Tampa Water Works, is steeped in local lore, and the restaurant itself takes its name from the legendary Native American princess Ulele. The ambiance was perfect—a beautiful blend of rustic charm and modern elegance, making it feel both warm and inviting as soon as we stepped through the door.
I kicked things off with their Shrimp Cocktail, and to say it was memorable would be an understatement. The jumbo shrimp were poached to perfection in pickling spice and lemon, giving them a burst of bright, fresh flavor. The fresh horseradish cocktail sauce provided just the right amount of heat to balance the lightness of the shrimp. It was like tasting the ocean in the best way possible.
Meanwhile, my other half ordered the Pork Shank, and I couldn’t resist stealing a few bites. The meat was so tender it practically fell off the bone. But what stood out was the side of macaroni and cheese with crab meat. Rich, creamy, and packed with delicate crab flavor—it was the ultimate comfort food elevated to something extraordinary.
For my main course, I had Ulele’s latest seafood dinner. It was as fresh and delicious as I’d hoped, highlighting the restaurant’s commitment to using local, high-quality ingredients. Every bite felt like a love letter to Florida’s coastal bounty.
By the end of the night, I couldn’t stop smiling. The food was incredible, but more than that, I was grateful for how my significant other had chosen the perfect place. It felt like he knew exactly what would make the night special, and it left us feeling completely satisfied, from the first bite to the last shared laugh.
We’ll definitely be returning to Ulele soon. Between its deep connection to Tampa’s history, the thoughtfully prepared food, and the overall experience, it’s the kind of place that reminds you why the little moments, like dinner with someone who just gets you, matter so much.
